Wheelset Alignment Tool

The wheelset alignment tool allows for the subsequent adjustment of the track gauge on model railway wheels in N and TT gauges.
It can be used to precisely press together or pull apart wheelsets to the exact dimension. Measurement is done with a caliper gauge or a track gauge.

TIP: Order suitable replacement tips with your order!

Video Tutorial: Adjusting the Track Gauge of Removed Locomotive & Wagon Axles with the Wheelset Alignment Tool:

Summary of Instructions:

The wheelset alignment tool is needed when the track gauge of an axle is incorrect. This is often noticed when a model derails and can occur, for example, with a used wagon purchased at a model railway swap meet. Use the following steps to adjust the track gauge:

  • Insert the appropriate spindle tip for the axle into the tool's spindle:
    • Wagons typically use axle-hung bearings. For these, you need the conical spindle tip. The cone protects the tip from deformation.
    • Locomotives and traction vehicles usually have flat axles, for which you should use the flat spindle tip.

  • Reducing Track Gauge:
    • Place the axle completely inside the tool.
    • Center and secure the wheel disc with the spindle tip.
    • It is important that the axle is aligned with the spindle.
    • Turn the spindle clockwise using the cross handle.
    • This applies pressure to the axle, thereby reducing the track gauge.
    • Open the tool again by turning the cross handle counterclockwise and remove the axle.

  • Increasing Track Gauge:
    • Place the axle outside the tool.
    • Ensure the wheel disc rests flat and center and secure it with the spindle tip.
    • Turn the spindle clockwise using the cross handle.
    • This applies pressure to the wheel disc, thereby increasing the track gauge.
    • Open the tool again by turning the cross handle counterclockwise and remove the axle.

  • The track gauge can then be checked with a track gauge or caliper gauge.
